New Opioid Crisis Bill Includes Medicare Coverage of Counselors
May 18, 2018 by NBCC Government Affairs
Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL) has introduced H.R 5531, the Opioid Emergency Response Act. The bill contains a seven-point plan to address the opioid crisis, including a section authorizing mental health counselors to serve as Medicare providers. Rep. Buchanan is a cosponsor of H.R. 3032, our standalone Medicare bill, and made it a top priority to have the measure included in his opioid bill.

Congress is in the process of developing a legislative package to address the opioid crisis. The NBCC is pushing to include our Medicare legislation in both House and Senate proposals. We urge counselors to visit our grassroots action center and use the tools there to call, write, and send Facebook and Twitter messages to their legislators advocating for our Medicare language in any congressional opioid measure.
