988 Launches July 2022
In 2020, the U.S. Congress designated a new three-digit dialing code - 988 - for Americans to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (Lifeline). The new dialing code will become active on July 16, 2022. The 988 dialing code was enacted to enhance access to suicide prevention and crisis services. Instead of trying to remember the toll-free Lifeline number (1-800-273-TALK) during times of emotional and suicidal distress, individuals will now be able to access the Lifeline network via the new easy-to-remember 988 number. To learn more about the new 988 code, please see the FAQs Fact Sheet developed by the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD) and Vibrant Emotional Health.
Support the 988 Implementation Act
In addition, please ask congress to support the 988 Implementation Act of 2022 Take Action - 988 Implementation Act. This act will provide for the implementation of the new National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number (9-8-8) and will deliver much needed federal guidance and resources to enable states to establish their 9-8-8 systems and align crisis services ahead of the start date.
