The New York State Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW-NYS) is excited to introduce legislation in support of Social Work Loan Forgiveness; NYS A8375, Sponsored by Assembly Member Gunther; and S8218, Sponsored by Senator May!
This legislation provides loan forgiveness opportunities for social workers throughout New York State. The burden of student loan debt for social workers can pose a barrier to effectively serving our communities and clients. This legislation awards applicants who meet the specified eligibility criteria by committing to practice in a county with less than two hundred thousand population or any town with a population of less than one hundred fifty persons per square mile for the duration of the award.
We understand that this is the first step of many. We need your support and participation to continue to progress in this area. Social work loan forgiveness programs can help address workforce shortages, improve access to services in underserved areas, promote public service values, reduce financial barriers to education, support the retention of experienced professionals, and enhance overall job satisfaction within the social work profession. So, let’s take this first step together, and every step after that to work towards the change we want to see for loan forgiveness opportunities.
