NASW-MA testifies at the State House in support or opposition of various bills, often those that are on our legislative agenda or at the request of coalition partners. We encourage social workers in all settings to come to hearings and make their voice heard on issues that make a difference in the social work profession and the clients we serve.
What does a written testimony look like?
Many organizations use their own letterhead, but almost all testimonies traditionally follow the same format, see a real testimony that we submitted in 2017: Example Testimony
I want to submit oral or written testimony...where do I start?
If you are interested in testifying in support or opposition of a bill as an individual, you do not need to contact the chapter.
If you are interested in testifying for a bill as part of a panel on behalf of NASW-MA, please contact the political director for next steps.
Personal stories- the reason driving behind you wanting to testify is all you need to write a compelling testimony. Facts and figures are usually give by supporting organizations! To help you get started, use our Testimony Template.
You are always welcome to attend the testimony and wait until they call up "walk-in" testimonies if not attending with a coalition or NASW. You will have maximum 3 minutes to deliver your testimony.
I've written my testimony, who do I send it to?
The Chair(s) of the Committee where the bill has been sent. You can look this up by entering the bill number at www.malegislature.gov . The website will give you contact information for the Chair(s) of the committee. For joint committees (Senators and Representatives), be sure to send or make two copies.
