Last week was a big week of action as congressional leaders, pharmacy associations, and dedicated advocates engaged full force to elevate the urgency, visibility, and pressure for Congress to take immediate action on “must-pass” pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) reforms in the 118th Congress. WE MUST NOT STOP! NACDS RxIMPACT is calling for YOUR help in feeding the fire of the PBM reform momentum that is out there by acting TODAY to send letters to your members of Congress!
Top executives of the “big three” PBMs were called to testify at a July 23 hearing of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Accountability. Take some time and use our hearing recording link to see why NACDS RxIMPACT received almost 300 emails from advocates sharing their opinions about the hearing and why watching it was so valuable to them.
That same day, the House Oversight and Accountability Committee released a report which described the Committee’s “findings that PBMs inflate prescription drug costs and interfere with patient care for their own financial benefit.” Read highlights and or the full Committee report.
Seven pharmacy groups alongside NACDS sent a pre-hearing PBM reform message to the Committee: National Community Pharmacists Association, American Pharmacists Association, National Association of Specialty Pharmacy, FMI – The Food Industry Association, National Grocers Association, National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, and Independent Pharmacy Cooperative. Read the statement.
Over 1,600 from 50 states registered to participate in the Virtual “PBM Patrol” Watch Party that showed Committee members pharmacies were watching the hearing. These numbers were shared with Committee staff beforehand and inspired leaders to attend – and even speak up at – the hearing. We also celebrate the 30 NACDS RxIMPACT advocates who donned a white coat to personally attend the hearing. In one look, every Committee member interacting with those providing testimony saw a sea of white coats representing pharmacy! Your work helped build off a massive NACDS ad campaign showing community engagement!
We must remind leaders the time to act is NOW. Although we hail the important bipartisan work of many important Senate and House committees, leadership, and other PBM-reform advocates, we must push for enactment to make these policies reality! We need YOUR help telling Congress the “Time Is Now” to reduce patients’ drug costs, to stop PBMs from forcing pharmacies to fill prescriptions at a loss, and to ensure Americans can access the pharmacies and medications that are right for them – rather than those that are right for PBMs’ profits.
