With fourteen business days left to the New York legislative session, NACDS RxIMPACT is calling for your help to advance several important pro-patient, pro-policies that need lawmaker support! Please take a few moments to send your letters to your state Senator, state Assemblymember, and Governor Hochul to tell them passage of these policies will greatly benefit patient access throughout New York!
TEST POLICY: Legislation by State Senator Gustavo Rivera (S.3467) and Assemblyman John McDonald, RPh (A.6627B) would expand the list of pharmacist-provided Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA)-waived tests. If enacted, this policy would enable licensed pharmacists to order and administer CLIA-waived tests for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), Group A Streptococcal, HbA1c, Hepatitis C and HIV.
TREAT POLICY: Legislation by State Senator Gustavo Rivera (S.7839) and Assemblyman John McDonald, RPh (A.8596) would enable pharmacies to treat based on a positive test for COVID-19, flu and strep under a strict protocol with a physician. Appropriate medication taken within 48 hours of the onset of an illness can help reduce its duration and symptom severity, as well as complications and the spread of infection.
TECHNICIAN AUTHORITY: A proposal would recognize certified pharmacy technicians in a retail setting and allow administration of vaccines under supervision of a pharmacist if they are certified by a nationally accredited pharmacy technician certification program. Senate Bill S.8545 by Senator Jeremy Cooney and Assembly Bill A.9251 by Assemblyman Michaelle Solages would align New York laws with nearly every other state, create greater workforce opportunities, and improve pharmacy care in the state overall.
