Parents in Michigan still have the legal right to make informed vaccine decisions for their children, including filing medical, religious, or philosophical exemptions. However, families continue to report unnecessary barriers — such as mandatory in-person education sessions and other administrative hurdles — when trying to exercise those rights.
Senate Bills 797 & 798 and companion House Bills 5634 & 5635 would protect parental choice by prohibiting the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) from creating new or stricter rules beyond what state law already requires. These bills simply reinforce current statute and prevent unelected bureaucrats from adding extra obstacles.
All four bills were introduced in late February 2026 and are currently sitting in committee (Senate Government Operations and House Health Policy) with no hearings scheduled yet.
Now is the time to act — we need to generate strong constituent pressure so these bills receive a prompt hearing and move forward.
