The state's emissions reduction policies force utilities to purchase expensive offshore wind and solar power while shutting down more affordable and reliable energy sources. These and other mandates drive up costs for consumers, making it harder for families to heat their homes and for businesses to keep the lights on. Meanwhile, massive taxpayer subsidies are handed out to keep these unreliable energy sources afloat, while the working ratepayers of our state are forced to foot the bill.
The Net-Zero by 2050 mandate is an unrealistic and costly government dictate and is the leading driver of the wheels in motion that lead to an increase in people’s utility bills. Instead of allowing for a balanced and flexible approach to energy policy, this rigid requirement is forcing utilities, businesses, and consumers into a corner—one that leads to ever-higher energy costs and reduced grid reliability down the road. Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance firmly believes this mandate should serve as an aspirational goal rather than a rigid legal requirement that jeopardizes the well-being of our residents and economy.
With Massachusetts already struggling with high taxes and a flight of both people and wealth out of state, these reckless policies are making it even more unaffordable to live and work in the Commonwealth. Instead of doubling down on costly mandates, lawmakers should focus on policies that promote energy affordability, reliability, and consumer choice.
We need to send a strong message to Beacon Hill: Enough is enough. Contact your legislators today and demand that they roll back these expensive energy mandates and end the Net-Zero by 2050 requirement as a legal mandate. Massachusetts families and businesses deserve energy policies that work for them—not against them.
