Gun violence is a public health crisis. Firearms are now the leading cause of death for children under the age of 19. A 2019 national survey conducted found that more than three-quarters of adults (79%) in the U.S. say they experience stress as a result of the possibility of a mass shooting. Currently, six in ten parents report worrying about school violence. Every year, an estimated 3 million American children witness gun violence, impacting their ability to learn and thrive. According to a recent study, parents across political, ideological, and socio-economic spectra want stronger gun laws. It is time for our elected representatives to take meaningful action and protect our communities from gun violence. Please urge your U.S. Senators to co-sponsor the GOSAFE Act (S.3369) today. The GOSAFE Act will:
- restrict access to gas-operated semi-automatic firearms, which includes assault weapons
- authorize grants for gun buy-back programs
- require the Attorney General to publish a list of prohibited firearms and exempt firearms
We must pass legislation now to promote gun safety and increase rigorous research on gun violence. Studies have found that laws restricting access to military-style weapons and large-capacity magazines have been effective in reducing gun-related deaths, injuries and fatal mass shootings. Laws that promote safe gun storage; expanded background checks; raising the age limit on ownership; tracking unlawful attempts to purchase firearms; supporting Extreme Risk Protection Order laws; and banning weapons that can cause mass destruction in a short period of time are effective. These laws can prevent suicides, deaths by firearms, and reduce the risks to others.
PTA has challenged Congress over and over again to address this issue. We are never going to stop advocating to make every child's potential a reality with one united voice. Every child deserves a safe environment to live and learn in, free from the fear of violence. We urge you to join us in demanding change.
Contact your Senators today to urge them to co-sponsor the GOSAFE ACT (S.3369), a vital piece of legislation that will protect our communities. Thank you.
