Wisconsin Assembly Bill 550, introduced in 2025 by Representative Elijah Behnke and seven co-sponsors (bipartisan), requires manufacturers to add a prominent warning label to packaged foods sold in the state if they contain any of 51 specific ingredients like artificial colors, preservatives, or additives banned in Australia, Canada, the EU, or the UK. The label must say: "WARNING: This product contains an artificial color, chemical, or food additive that is banned in Australia, Canada, the European Union, or the United Kingdom." It has to be visible, high-contrast, and also posted online for web sales. First-time violators face fines of $100 to $1,000 or up to 6 months in jail; repeat offenders get $500 to $5,000 fines and 30 days to a year in jail. Or, violators can pay a $1,000 forfeiture per violation. The law starts January 1, 2027, giving time for label changes.
The Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Movement, led by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., supports this bill as a Pro-MAHA initiative because it forces transparency about harmful food additives, empowering Wisconsinites to avoid chemicals linked to health issues like allergies or behavioral problems. By highlighting ingredients banned elsewhere, the bill aligns with MAHA's fight against toxic food systems and Big Food's deceptive practices. It promotes informed choices, helping families opt for cleaner, safer foods and reducing exposure to unnecessary additives that Kennedy has criticized as profit-driven risks
