California's legislators are considering a new bill to expand assisted suicide to even more vulnerable people.
Assisted suicide has been legal in California since 2016, but the proposed bill, SB 1196, would make it far more prevalent and accessible, posing immense dangers to thousands of lives.

The bill would:
- remove the 6-month prognosis requirement so that any adult with “a grievous and irremediable medical condition” can request assisted suicide.
- allow patients with dementia to consent to assisted suicide.
- remove the requirement of residency in the state, making it a destination for assisted suicide.
- allow same-day death by removing the 48-hour waiting period, among other horrifying changes.

If passed, it is only a matter of time before the bill is extended even further, such as in Canada where an attempt was made last month to expand eligibility to include individuals with any sort of illness, including mental illness and not limited to terminal diagnosis. There are also growing calls to lower the minimum age requirement to as low as 12.
Thankfully, that legislation was temporarily put on hold in Canada, but there’s no telling how long it will be until it returns. California can expect the same if this bill is passed.

All humans deserve care and respect, especially when in their darkest moments. But instead, some of our legislators are seeking to encourage those enduring great suffering to kill themselves.
It is sickening that those charged with protecting human life are destroying it.
That is in no way what Californians deserve. Every life is precious, and our legislation must acknowledge that.
