I am writing to ask you to support policies that empower, protect, and advance America’s credit unions.
The “People Helping People” philosophy drives credit unions to champion millions of consumers, fostering financial well-being for individuals, families, businesses, and entire communities.
That is why I am asking you to prioritize consumers over profit, remove unnecessary barriers, and ensure our industry can continue to thrive. Specifically, you can help my credit union by:
- Protecting the credit union tax exemption. Taxing credit unions would be a direct tax on more than 140 million Americans who rely on them for affordable financial services. As not-for-profit financial cooperatives, credit unions earn their tax status every single day.
- Modernizing regulations to support, not hinder, credit unions. Certain reporting thresholds like that of Currency Transaction Reports have never been indexed for inflation. The modest adjustment provided by Rep. Barry Loudermilk’s H.R. 1799 would free up resources to focus on compliance, fraud, member services, and the greater community. Please cosponsor H.R. 1799.
- Increasing access to capital for small businesses. As it pertains to commercial loans, credit unions are only able to lend up to 12.25% of their assets with the exception of small business loans under $50,000. In today’s world, most small business loans are valued at much more than $50,000. Adjusting for inflation and increasing this exemption to $100,000 would ensure small businesses can get the capital they need to be successful. Please cosponsor H.R. 1791 by Reps. Vicente Gonzalez and Brian Fitzpatrick.
By supporting these priorities, we can continue to provide affordable financial services, invest in our communities, and serve our members without unnecessary regulatory burdens. Thank you for your continued support of credit unions.
