Urgent—Congress Must Act to Reverse Devastating Cuts to Language Education Offices!
On Tuesday, March 11th, the US Department of Education announced that it was laying off close to 50% of its staff, including virtually all staff for the Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA). Subsequently, the Department announced that OELA, which administers the Title III grants, had been absorbed within the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education at the Department. Additionally, the International and Foreign Language Education Studies office, which includes the Advanced Training and Research Group and the International Studies Group, lost all of its employees and its functions were assigned to the larger Office of Postsecondary Education. Ten days later, President Trump signed an Executive Order that directed US Secretary of Education McMahon to close the Department of Education.

A lawsuit has been filed by 21 state attorneys general  objecting to the process and scope of this unprecedented lay-off and separate lawsuits are pending on the Executive Order. Additionally, JNCL-NCLIS is working closely with the EL-Roundtable to advocate for a reversal of the Department’s  lay-offs and the restoration of OELA and IFLE and their critical employees.

We need your help to advocate that Congress, which has oversight authority over the Department of Education and its programs, step in to protect these important language education offices. Please take a few minutes to review, personalize, and send the template letter that we have prepared to your Senators and Representatives.

It is all hands on deck to preserve key language education functions of the Department of Education. Please join us in this fight.
