It is important that Senate President Nick Scutari allow NJ Senate Bills S1292 and S2937 be heard by committee members so that it can be voted on and on the road towards being signed into law by the Governor. It's important that we as a Jewish community show our strong and unwavering support of these bills, especially with the rampant rise in antisemitism we've seen here in New Jersey. Please see below for information on the Senate bills we are asking for your help in bringing to Senate President Scutari's attention, and their outcomes if passed into law:
NJ Senate Bill 1292 (sponsored by Senator James Beach):
- Create a clear definition of antisemitism in New Jersey based on the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition.
- Call on the State of New Jersey to use this definition of antisemitism to determine whether an alleged act was motivated by antisemitism.
- Call on the Office of the Attorney General to establish a public-funded awareness campaign that promotes bias crime reporting in New Jersey.
The public awareness campaign shall include, but not limited to:- Providing community outreach
- Training on how to identify and report bias crimes
- Providing and disseminating information to the public about the resources available through the New Jersey Bias Crimes Reporting Unit, including the bias crime reporting hotline.
NJ Senate Bill S2937 (sponsored by Senator James Beach):
- Require Definitions of Antisemitism and Islamophobia be included in New Jersey's Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI), and belonging policies, and any such policy for recipients of State's funds.
