New Jersey State Assembly Bill A3558 would establish the IHRA Definition of Antisemitism into state law. Right now we are waiting on Speaker Coughlin and Assemblyman Danielsen to hear A3558 in the Assembly. We urge you to contact NJ Assembly leaders TODAY and demand they listen over 50 of their Assembly colleagues and advance bill A3558 out of the Assembly Public Safety & Preparedness Committee.
With reported antisemitic incidents hitting an all-time high over the past year, the highest number ever recorded by the ADL in the state and the third-highest number recorded in any state across the country last year, the Jewish community needs clear protections now more than ever.
NJ Assembly Bill A3558 (sponsored by Assemblyman Gary Schaer, Asemblyman Michael Inganamort, and Assemblyman Benjie Wimberly) will accomplish the following:
- Create a clear definition of antisemitism in New Jersey based on the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition.
- Call on the State of New Jersey to use this definition of antisemitism to determine whether an alleged act was motivated by antisemitism.
- Call on the Office of the Attorney General to establish a public-funded awareness campaign that promotes bias crime reporting in New Jersey.
This public awareness campaign shall include, but not limited to:- Providing community outreach
- Training on how to identify and report bias crimes
- Providing and disseminating information to the public about the resources available through the New Jersey Bias Crimes Reporting Unit, including the bias crime reporting hotline.
By taking action today and sending a pre-written message to Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin and Committee Chairman Joe Danielsen to join their colleagues in doing what is right for Jews and hear this legislation in the Assembly, you will help ensure that our institutions are given the tools to stem both criminal conduct and discriminatory acts motivated by antisemitism, and create a more inclusive environment for all people.
Together we can ensure the safety and dignity of Jews across New Jersey. Act now to make a difference. Thank you for your unwavering support.
