Thank you for your interest in taking action on this critical issue! Unfortunately, as of January 23rd 2025, this bill has passed in both the US Senate and the House of Representatives.

If you're interested in other ways to take action to protect our immigrant siblings, check out our Action Center for other opportunities, such as sending a message to President Trump that people of faith oppose his recent anti-immigrant executive orders.

Blessings,
The UCC Washington DC Office Team

On Monday the U.S Senate passed S.5 (also known as the Laken Riley Act) a bill that will criminalize immigrants and apply “mandatory detention” for any undocumented person arrested or charged (rather than convicted) of a non-violent theft-related offense, without any opportunity to even request release on bond. This mandatory immigration detention is applied solely on the basis of an arrest or charge, risking the prolonged detention of innocent people. Throughout Scripture, we are called to welcome the stranger and care for the marginalized. This bill violates our values of love and mercy, and we urge you to contact your senators and tell them to vote NO on S.5. As a faith tradition grounded in love and mercy, and we urge you to contact your representative and tell them to vote NO on S.5.
