Support Education Savings Accounts

The Senate Education Committee has passed Senate File 547, which will offer Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) in the amount of about $4,000 for parents of children with special needs and some parents who have been denied open enrollment within the public school system. Education Savings Accounts allow parents who choose not to enroll their children in a public school to receive a deposit of public funds into a savings account set up by the state. This money could be used by parents for Catholic school tuition and some other education expenses including tutoring.

Iowa has increased public school funding annually while maintaining school choice programs such as the School Tuition Organization tax credits. Iowa’s commitment to public and non-public education has been and always will be strong. No state or local funding for public schools would be diverted to this program as ESAs would be funded by a separate appropriation by the legislature.

We believe that all parents, regardless of address or income, deserve education choices that reflect their basic convictions and aspirations for their child. We encourage you to contact your Senator in support of an ESA program which would be accessible to as many parents as possible. Rewrite the sample message in your own words and keep your comments positive.

Thank you for your help!

“Consequently, the public power, which has the obligation to protect and defend the rights of citizens, must see to it, in its concern for distributive justice, that public subsidies are paid out in such a way that parents are truly free to choose according to their conscience the schools they want for their children.”
Declaration on Christian Education (Gravissimum Educationis), Pope Paul VI
