Last year, FPA asked you, our members, to reach out to your legislators in support of the Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow's Workforce Act (HR 1477/S 722). The momentum for this legislation has grown exponentially! Our Coalition of 800 organizations has now gathered 128 bipartisan cosponsors in the House and 22 bipartisan cosponsors in the Senate, and we need to keep this momentum going to get this bill across the finish line in 2024!
The Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow’s Workforce Act is an important piece of legislation that would expand eligible uses of tax-favorable 529 savings plans to cover costs associated with workforce training and credentialing programs, including professional certifications like the CFP® certification. This bill would provide valuable tax-advantaged resources for workers who pursue career growth, mid-career changes, or alternative career pathways.
As financial planners and advisers, you are uniquely suited to speak to your legislator on this topic: not only have many of you received private certifications as part of your own career path, you work directly with the families who rely on 529 savings plans to help their children reach their career goals which, for many families, may not include a traditional college education.
This bipartisan, bicameral legislation has increasingly strong support at the Capitol, but we need YOUR voice to encourage more legislators to co-sponsor HR 1477 and S 722 in order to keep the bill moving this session.
