Urge your Representatives to Sponsor H.R.8501
On 15 April 2023, violent clashes erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), leading to the displacement of over 8.6 million people, including internally displaced persons, asylum seekers, and refugees. This conflict worsened Sudan's pre-existing challenges, such as ongoing violence, disease outbreaks, economic and political instability, and climate emergencies. By April 2024, the conflict had resulted in at least 20,000 deaths, nearly 30,000 injuries, and widespread displacement, with nearly half the population—25 million people—in immediate need of humanitarian assistance. Darfur, in particular, has experienced mass killings and displacement with reports of ethnic violence.

The people of Sudan are enduring unimaginable violence, including forced starvation, sexual and gender-based violence, displacement, torture, and lack of access to medical care. Even more troubling is the fact that the RSF continues to be funded and armed by external actors, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which is supplying  arms, troops, and financial support. The  RSF previously carried out the genocide in Darfur in 2003.

Representative Sara Jacobs introduced H.R.8501 to address the role of the UAE in the ongoing violence by prohibiting the United States from providing arms until the President can confirm to Congress that the UAE is no longer funding the RSF. This bill would ensure that a key source of funding for the RSF will be cut off and holds our allies accountable for their role in enabling atrocities in Sudan.

Please contact your Representatives today and urge them to cosponsor H.R.8501.
