Protect the use of threat detection systems
Florida lawmakers have introduced legislation (SB 562 and HB 491) that would ban the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to detect firearms in public areas.

If passed, this law would make it illegal for any camera, video recording, or live-streaming device to utilize AI for firearm detection, with misdemeanor penalties for violations.

However, customers have a right to use this technology to detect threats and enhance safety. Contrary to what proponents of the ban claim, firearm detection AI does not infringe on anyone’s rights. It does not prevent individuals from entering an area and is far less invasive than metal detectors or security pat-downs.

With only a few exemptions, this bill would severely restrict security systems now and in the future. Places of worship, airports, hospitals, and sporting events would be left more vulnerable, unable to take advantage of advanced security and life-saving technology. This poses a serious risk to public safety.

Rather than banning this valuable tool, lawmakers should recognize that its benefits far outweigh any concerns. AI-driven firearm detection can assist law enforcement, improve response times, and help keep our communities safe.
