Children and adults with SMA may benefit from assistive technology (AT) devices, such as mobility aides, screen readers, robotic arms, or adaptive utensils, to assist in their daily activities and to increase their independence.
To expand awareness and access to AT devices and services, Congress established the Assistive Technology State Grant Program at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that funds AT programs in all 50 states, U.S. Territories, and the District of Columbia. Through state IT programs, more than 43,000 AT devices were loaned to individuals with disabilities to test before purchasing (to make sure the device meets their needs) and 40,000 individuals received training on AT devices.
The training and device loan programs available through state IT programs make it possible for people with SMA and other disabilities to remain updated on technological advances that could greatly improve their independence and quality of life.
Tell Congress to fully fund state AT programs.
