Did you know that only 2 in 10 individuals with disabilities (over age 16) participate in the workforce compared to nearly 7 in 10 for individuals without disabilities?
Labor force participation is greater for individuals with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), with about 48% of adults with SMA reporting to Cure SMA that they work full-time or part-time. Yet many with SMA still face barriers. About 13% of adults with SMA are unemployed, but actively seeking employment and 14% of individuals with SMA who work part-time are seeking full-time work.
While individuals with SMA and other disabilities are an untapped talent pool for employers, far too many face significant barriers to employment, which can include prejudice, inaccessible workplaces, a lack of workplace accommodations, and fear of losing caregiving or other disability benefits.
Tell Congress to promote employment for people with SMA and other disabilities by increasing employment opportunities and breaking down employment barriers.
