Individuals with SMA and other disabilities face unique challenges during disasters and emergencies related to safe evacuation and continuing essential care, treatment and in-home services. Past hurricanes and other significant storms caused evacuation havoc and related concerns. Even minor storms that cause power outages can be dangerous given ventilators and other essential medical equipment that people with SMA may need requires electricity.
As Congress debates legislation to more effectively prepare and respond to future pandemics and emergencies, please tell Congress to meet the needs of people with SMA and other disabilities by:
- Requiring people with disabilities are included in state emergency preparedness and response plans,
- Ensuring people with disabilities can access immediate care and support in cases of emergency, and
- Prohibiting discrimination in emergency care and treatment based on disability.
It is critical that Congress fully considers the concerns, experiences, and needs of people with SMA and other disabilities related to emergency preparedness and response.
