Decisions about SMA treatment should be made solely by individuals with SMA and their family, in consultation with their healthcare provider.
Unfortunately, some health insurance plans include restrictions, including prior authorizations or step edits, that delay or prevent access to an individual's preferred treatment until after they try a different treatment mandated by the health plan. Lengthy insurance appeals can cause irreversible damage, since lost neurons can never be regenerated.
The Cure SMA-supported Safe Step Act (H.R. 2630 / S. 652) would establish a medically reasonable and expedient exemption process for the step edit (also known as step therapy protocol).
It is critical that individuals with SMA can access the SMA treatment of their choice, based on their individualized needs and the recommendation of their healthcare provider.
