URGENT: Sign the petition to lower health care costs

Health care is already too expensive for many Alabamians — and unless Congress acts soon, it’s about to get much worse.

More than 400,000 Alabamians receive enhanced premium tax credits to help them afford coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace (HealthCare.gov) created under the Affordable Care Act. These tax credits have made health insurance more affordable and accessible — especially here in Alabama, where leaders have refused to expand Medicaid. That means we rely more heavily on HealthCare.gov to keep our communities covered.

But these enhanced tax credits are set to expire at the end of this year — and the consequences will be devastating.

🔺 What’s at stake?

  • Without action, the average Alabamian’s healthcare.gov insurance premium would increase by a staggering 93%, according to KFF.
  • As a result, about 130,000 Alabamians could lose health insurance. That would shrink our economy by $1.14 billion and cost the state 10,000 jobs in 2026.
  • The biggest burden would fall on older adults and people with lower incomes, pushing even more Alabamians into the uninsured category.

We can’t let that happen.

🖊️ Add your voice now: Tell Congress to extend the enhanced premium tax credits and protect health care access for Alabama families.

These tax credits are saving lives — helping Alabamians get covered, catch illnesses early and access the care they need. In a state where coverage is already limited, we can’t afford to take a step backward.

👉 Sign the petition today and urge Congress: Keep health insurance affordable. Don’t let Alabama lose coverage.

Petition Text

To our elected leaders in Congress:

We, the undersigned, urge you to take immediate action to protect affordable health care for Alabama families by extending the enhanced Premium Tax Credits (ePTCs) before they expire at the end of 2025.

These enhanced subsidies are a lifeline for hundreds of thousands of low- and moderate-income Alabamians who otherwise would struggle to afford health coverage — including individuals making as little as $15,650 a year or families of four earning around $32,000. If Congress fails to act, healthcare.gov premiums in Alabama could increase by an average of 93% by 2026 — forcing families, small business owners and older adults to drop their high-quality health coverage and leaving many of them uninsured.

Alabama has not expanded Medicaid, so we rely more than most states on the Marketplace to keep people insured. These subsidies are working — and they must be preserved.

We’re counting on you to:

  • Take urgent action NOW to extend the  ePTCs.
  • Prevent massive premium hikes that would price people out of care.
  • Include this extension in any must-pass, end-of-year legislation.

Health care costs are already too high. Don’t let it get worse. Protect Alabama families from losing access to affordable coverage.
