More than 400,000 Alabamians received enhanced Premium Tax Credits last year to help them afford coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace (HealthCare.gov) created under the Affordable Care Act. Those tax credits made health insurance more affordable and accessible — especially here in Alabama, where leaders have refused to expand Medicaid. That means we rely more heavily on HealthCare.gov to keep our communities covered.
But these enhanced tax credits expired at the end of 2025, and the consequences have been devastating:
- The average Alabamian’s healthcare.gov insurance premium doubled.
- By July, almost 95,000 Alabamians dropped their health coverage.
- Many Alabamians selected lower-quality healthcare plans that may not protect them in the future.
It's not too late to fix this. Congress still can restore the enhanced Premium Tax Credits and increase healthcare access for Alabama families.
These tax credits saved lives. They helped Alabamians get covered, catch illnesses early and access the care they need.
Congress failed to act, but we won’t stay silent. Affordable health insurance isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. Tell Congress to fix this mistake and protect our healthcare.
