Victory on Gillnets - ODFW Commission Reaffirms Kitzhaber Plan
As reported by the Stop Gillnetting Now campaign:

Great news! The Kitzhaber plan to remove commercial gillnets from the mainstem Columbia River remains on track.

After a full day of testimony, the ODFW Commission voted last Thursday by a 5-1 margin to reaffirm their commitment to the gillnet phase out plan.  A new vote was necessary in order to address several procedural issues related to last December's vote that were raised in lawsuits by the gillnet lobby.

The commercial gillnet industry showed up in force and hoped to use the re-vote to get the Commission to scrap the plan entirely.  Thankfully, the ODFW Commission stood by the compromise plan and their original December vote.

CCA Washington Intervenes in Columbia River Gillnet Lawsuit
In April commercial gillnet interests filed a lawsuit in Thurston County Superior Court challenging the new Columbia River fishery reform policy that was adopted by the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission. Earlier this month CCA Washington filed a motion to intervene in the lawsuit.

On Thursday, June 13, CCA’s motion to intervene was granted by the Thurston County Superior Court. By intervening CCA Washington becomes a formal party in the case and will be joining with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife to defend the policy.

CCA Washington is committed to defending the Columbia River fishery reform policy and its benefits for our fisheries’ resources. CCA has already hired expert, outside legal counsel to help defend the rule and represent our members’ interests as the lawsuit progresses.

If you are not a current member of CCA and would like to join us in defending our fisheries’ resources, please become a member today by calling 877-255-8772 or visiting www.ccamembership.org.

  Cowlitz River Updates
Last month Tacoma Power and WDFW hosted a meeting at Centralia College to discuss fishing opportunities, or lack thereof, on the Cowlitz River. Numerous concerned anglers, many who are members of CCA, turned up at the meeting in a strong show of support from the recreational fishing community. Although a lot of questions were raised, not many answers were provided. However, Both Tacoma Power and WDFW have promised to host future meetings and provide the fishing public with much needed answers to these questions.

CCA Washington continues to be actively engaged with the legislature trying to increase hatchery production of fall Chinook on the Cowlitz. We are working with members of the House and Senate on both their capital and operating budgets. In recent years hatchery fall Chinook plants have been drastically reduced. We are hoping to increase smolt plants by two million fish annually.

  Member Spotlight: Peter Flohr

Peter Flohr, a member of the North Central Washington chapter, is a Seattle native who moved to Wenatchee nearly ten years ago. Peter has done it all in life, racing sailboats, working as a rafting guide, remodel carpenter, and now he is sharing his passion for fishing at Hooked On Toys Sporting Goods as a fishing specialist. There are few folks that know more about their local fisheries and how to target the big fish like Peter does!

Where do you like to fish? Peter is your consummate fisherman. There are so many places that he likes to fish but his absolute favorite is any spot where Chinook fishing is the hottest. Peter loves fishing for Chinook salmon.

What inspired you to get involved with CCA? The idea of getting gillnets out of the lower Columbia River is what inspired Peter to join CCA. Peter is looking forward to the day that those nets are gone from the main stem Columbia River.

In what areas are you currently involved? Aside from being on the NCW Board of Directors, Peter is also the Derby Chairman of the Wenatchee Salmon Derby that is entering its second year. The Wenatchee Salmon Derby precedes the NCW banquet and is a great event that is held July 19, 20, and 21st. At the end of the day, Peter simply enjoys feeling like he’s having a positive effect on our fisheries and CCA.
