PREMIERE OF MHAMD YOUTH VOICES SHORT FILM hear directly from Maryland’s youth and caregivers as they share their experiences navigating the state’s behavioral health system and their hopes for the future. REMARKS FROM LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR ARUNA MILLER PANEL DISCUSSION | IMPROVING SERVICES FOR CHILDREN, YOUTH, AND FAMILIES Over the past decade, Maryland has seen a marked decline in the availability of mental health and substance use services for younger Marylanders and a decrease in coordination across the state agencies serving them. At the same time, the need for these services has increased exponentially, and the results have been devastating. Maryland’s 46% increase in suicide-related emergency department visits among youth is a sobering reminder of what is at stake if we fail to act quickly and decisively to rebuild a holistic system of services, supports, and opportunity for children, youth, and families. During this year’s panel, MHAMD board members Jane Walker and Edgar Wiggins will moderated a conversation with the leaders who are championing efforts to restore and improve Maryland’s system of care. Moderators: Jane Walker and Edgar Wiggins, Board of Directors, Mental Health Association of Maryland Laura Herrera Scott, M.D., Secretary, Maryland Department of Health Rafael Lopez, Secretary, Maryland Department of Human Services Carmel Martin, Special Secretary, Governor’s Office for Children Vincent Schiraldi, Secretary, Maryland Department of Juvenile Services
