Restoration of the Everglades is critical to Florida’s fisheries, habitat, and water quality. Broad support and collaboration have resulted in historic funding, project development, and construction of projects to restore the flow of fresh water across South Florida. But we must keep up this momentum!
Human development has altered the flow of fresh water from Lake Okeechobee south into the Everglades. This means that the Everglades and Florida Bay to the south are starved of fresh water, while polluted freshwater overflows from Lake Okeechobee into the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie rivers during times of heavy rainfall. The alteration of these natural systems has resulted in a host of problems for both people and the environment, including harmful algal blooms, red tide, and seagrass die-offs.
Tell your congressional representatives to fully fund Everglades Restoration in 2024 and support authorization of the Western Everglades Restoration Plan, the Lake Okeechobee Component A Storage Reservoir, and the Lake Okeechobee Watershed Restoration Project in the 2024 Water Resources Development Act (WRDA).
