Unfortunately, unlike other federal agencies such as the National Park Service, the Corps does not have the authority to keep recreation fees collected at their facilities to support their own operations. This limitation makes it challenging to maintain popular boating access areas, having to compete for general fund monies.
The LAKES Act (Lake Access Keeping Economies Strong) will change this policy, helping to make sure fees boaters pay go to support the facilities we need. Introduced by Congressmen Bruce Westerman (AR), and Jared Huffman (CA) andSenators Kevin Cramer (ND) and Martin Heinrich (NM), the LAKES Act is good for boaters and the communities that serve them.
