Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) are a significant challenge for the United States. For boaters, the spread of AIS can lead to restrictions on access to waterways, fewer fishing opportunities and damage to their boats. Helping stop the spread of AIS is a policy priority for BoatU.S.
In support of this goal, BoatU.S. supported and participated in the Aquatic Invasive Species Commission. The Commission was established in 2022 to help stop and reverse the introduction and spread of AIS in the U.S. The commission is made up of a diverse group of scientists, conservationists, anglers, tribal leaders, boaters, business leaders, and policy experts. The Commission identified policies and funding priorities to better coordinate the response to AIS across federal, state and local governments. You can read the full report here.
The Commission recommended five priority actions that are now the focus of our advocacy work on the AIS issue. These include:
1. Update federal laws and policies to modernize the response to AIS.
2. Increase federal funding for AIS response and coordinate its expenditure with state and local partners.
3. Promote collaboration between government agencies and the private sector to enhance the prevention, detection, management and eradication of AIS.
4. Maintain access to the waterways for all users.
5. Increase education for the public to help understand the role we all play in stopping the spread of AIS.
Legislation is currently being drafted and BoatU.S. is working alongside our industry colleagues on engaging with Congress and the Administration to see the Commission’s recommendations are acted upon. BoatU.S. continues to speak up for boaters and help spread the word on our role in stopping the spread of AIS.
