National Voter Registration Day (September 19, 2023) is an opportunity to inform eligible Americans about how they can register to vote or update their voter registration if their information has changed since the previous election. Over the next year, there will be many elections at all levels of government, so it will be important for BBBS stakeholders to vote and make their voice heard in our democratic process.

According to U.S. Census data from 2020, as many as 1 in 4 eligible Americans are not registered to vote. Every year, millions of Americans find themselves unable to vote because they miss the registration deadline in their state or aren’t sure how to register to vote. National Voter Registration Day efforts are designed to ensure every eligible voter has the opportunity to vote.  

Now is a great time for BBBS agencies to mention to their Bigs, Littles over the age of 18, and their involved families to check their registration status, or register to vote. Across the network, 18-25 year olds is a rapidly growing demographic of youth served in our programs. As we work to support these young people, educating them about civic responsibility and participation in the democratic process are important values and actions we can instill to help them on their path toward a bright future.  

As a reminder, it is legal and permitted for nonprofits like BBBS to engage in voter registration efforts as long as they do not endorse a specific candidate or political party. The IRS specifically states that nonprofits may engage in voter participation.

This fall, BBBSA will be issuing a new Election 2024 toolkit that will include information about what activities BBBS agencies can do this upcoming election year and how best to navigate this politically charged season.
