Increase Federal Funding for GME Slots
Psychiatry, as well as medicine in general, is facing a historic workforce shortage. However, even as many medical students want to join the psychiatric profession, we don’t currently have enough residency positions available.

The Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act of 2023 (H.R. 2389) would address the workforce shortage by raising the number of Medicare-supported GME positions by 2,000 per year for seven years, ultimately creating 14,000 new GME positions.

Bipartisan congressional leaders have worked together to provide 1,200 new Medicare-supported GME positions since 2021 – the first such increases in nearly thirty years. It is critical that Congress continue to build on these efforts and invest in training more doctors.
