Urge Congress to Support Kidney Stone Research for Fiscal Year 2027
Service members and veterans are at an elevated risk of experiencing kidney stone disease. This is largely driven by environmental factors – as deployment sites commonly have hot, arid climates – increasing risk of dehydration, high heat exposure, and operational demands that limit fluid intake.

Despite the significant burden of kidney stone disease on our military and veteran community, related research remains overlooked within federal defense health research programs and across research initiatives under other agencies. That's why the AUA and the broader stakeholder community is urging Congress to add kidney stone disease to the list of topics eligible for funding under the Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP) within the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP) as part of FY 2027 Department of Defense (DoD) appropriations.

Last year, Congress appropriated $370 million for the PRMRP and designated 52 research topics eligible for funding under the program. These topics have outsized relevance to military health, and the list of eligible topics is determined by Senate Defense appropriators as part of the annual congressional appropriations process.

With the Senate Appropriations Committee now working to finalize FY 2027 appropriations bills – it’s a critical point in FY 2027 congressional process, and we need your help in making one final push to Senate appropriators to add KSD as a newly eligible PRMRP topic!
