In 2026, the American Cancer Society estimates 5,540 Arizona men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 900 will die from the disease, making it one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in the state.  Early detection can significantly improve outcomes, especially for individuals who are at higher risk of developing prostate cancer.  

However, studies show that men are much less likely to undergo screening when out-of-pocket costs are required. Even relatively modest expenses can create financial barriers that prevent individuals from accessing needed preventive services.  

In Arizona, discussions have highlighted the potential impact of reducing or removing out-of-pocket costs for prostate cancer screening and follow-up testing. One proposal under consideration, HB 2617, examines strategies that could help ensure high-risk individuals have improved access to screening at little or no personal cost.  

Increasing awareness of prostate cancer risk factors, the importance of early detection, and the role of financial accessibility can help support better health outcomes across the state.
