In 2026, the American Cancer Society estimates 11,670 Ohio men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 1,350 will die from the disease, making it one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in the state. Yet Ohio still does not require private insurance plans to cover prostate cancer screenings without cost-sharing. As a result, out-of-pocket costs prevent many high-risk men from accessing lifesaving screening and early detection.
All high-risk men deserve access to prostate cancer screening regardless of their ability to pay.
That is why we are urging lawmakers to support HB 33, introduced by Representative Dontavius Jarrells, a bipartisan bill that would require private insurance to cover prostate cancer screening for high-risk men without any out-of-pocket costs, including copays, deductibles, and coinsurance.
High-risk men, including Black men and those with a family history, experience higher rates of prostate cancer, more aggressive disease, and disproportionate mortality. Removing financial barriers is essential to saving lives.
Currently, Ohio lags behind states that already require cost-free coverage for other preventive screenings, such as mammograms and colonoscopies. HB 33 would help eliminate this disparity and ensure high-risk men receive the preventive care they need.
