The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently finalized its Calendar Year (CY) 2026 rule for the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) containing an alarming provision that undermines physician compensation, devalues the care and services they provide, and threatens to redefine the reimbursement landscape.
This so-called “efficiency adjustment” imposes a 2.5% cut to procedural work relative value units (wRVUs) for virtually all non-time based codes starting on January 1, 2026, with additional reductions expected every 3 years. This across-the-board cut is based on an unwarranted assumption that physicians inevitably become more efficient over time, performing all procedures faster and with less intensity. Importantly, this vastly overbroad claim is not based on input from practicing physicians, nor supported by recent data.
The AUA is fighting this policy, but we need your help. Tell your Members of Congress to stop this “efficiency adjustment” and ensure physicians are compensated adequately!
