On Feb. 2, House Bill 4779 and Senate Bill 3238 - APRN Radiation Administration were introduced by Rep. Yolanda Morris and Sen. Omar Aquino.

This legislation would allow advanced practice registered nurses to administer radiation and supervise the administration of radiation. This proposal, as written, would put patients at risk and inappropriately allow APRNs to supervise radiologic technologists.

ASRT has submitted letters urging Illinois to require APRNs to meet the same educational and training requirements currently in place for state accreditation. While APRNs are essential supportive personnel on physician-led health care teams, their education, training and experience levels are no substitute for the intensive and specialized training physicians receive. The amendments ASRT has submitted would protect patients by ensuring that only the APRNs who have specialized training and proven competency are performing the administration of radiation.

ASRT continues to monitor HB 4779 and SB 3238.
