Access to healthcare, especially preventive health, is one of ASCP’s top advocacy priority. In this Congress, we are supporting the Preventive Health Savings Act, a bipartisan and bicameral bill. As a pharmacist, you know that preventive health care improves health outcomes and yields significant savings to the health care system, but these savings are currently not calculated by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).
The Preventive Health Savings Act would allow CBO will tie together scientific data to estimate the benefits of preventive care, such as vaccines and chronic disease management efforts, to our healthcare system. Wellness and disease prevention are key elements in addressing chronic diseases that we, as pharmacists, focus on in our daily practice. Current law does not allow CBO scoring model to account for the significant health savings we contribute by providing preventive care services to our patients.
This bill has been introduced by Senator Benjamin Cardin (D-MD) and Congressman Michael Burgess, M.D. (R-TX).
