For the past year, ASCE has advocated for a comprehensive, multi-year reauthorization bill that fully funds transportation programs, promotes safety, streamlines project delivery, and supports research and standards to help make the country’s transportation network fit for the future. While recent federal and state investments have made a positive difference, the full effects of increased funding will take years to realize. ASCE believes the next reauthorization bill should focus on sustaining investment, a crucial step to provide infrastructure owners with certainty and allow projects that are on paper to proceed to development and construction.
ASCE recognizes the leaders of the House T&I Committee have been hard at work to draft and negotiate surface transportation reauthorization legislation. We urge both chambers of Congress to introduce bipartisan, multi-year legislation soon so that a final bill may be enacted before programs expire September 30th. Lapses in authorization are disruptive for the professionals who rely on federal programs to plan, design, and construct transportation projects. Delaying federal support will escalate costs and risks associated with an aging infrastructure system.
We need your help to advance this important legislation, which ASCE will provide a detailed analysis of shortly after its introduction. Contact your U.S. Senators and U.S. Representative to urge them to support timely introduction and passage of a surface transportation reauthorization bill. A strong demonstration of support for surface transportation reauthorization legislation in the House of Representatives is a key step toward productive negotiations with the Senate and final passage of this important bill.
