Please Help New Jersey Dentists Access PPE
New Jersey AGD Members,

As dental practices prepare to safely reopen and resume non-emergent care, it is crucial we have access to the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). New Jersey resides in FEMA Region II, which also includes the State of New York, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The NJAGD and AGD headquarters has had communications with FEMA and local emergency management agencies, but they have yet to address the issue of dental offices’ difficulty in obtaining PPE.

We need your help sending messages to state and federal government officials, urging them to prioritize dentists when distributing PPE and to address the issue of allocation throughout FEMA Region II.

SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is spread between individuals who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet), primarily through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. COVID-19 may also be spread by people who are not showing symptoms. There is evidence of the virus persisting in aerosols for hours, and on certain surfaces for days under laboratory conditions. Though evidence lax concerning the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission in dental practices or through specific aerosol-generating procedures (AGP), dental professionals are classified by OSHA as “very high risk” for worker exposure to SARS-CoV-2 alongside doctors, nurses, paramedics and emergency medical technicians.

Having access to appropriate equipment will allow us to continue treating emergent procedures, and help prevent additional strain on hospitals by keeping patients out of overwhelmed urgent care centers. Furthermore, it will allow for the safe continuation of treating non-emergent procedures and not create additional barriers to oral health care.

To ensure the safety of our staff, patients and the public, we must advocate for the dental community’s accessibility to PPE. Please fill out the form on this page and send a message to state and federal officials, requesting they address this issue in our region.

On behalf of the NJAGD, thank you in advance for your dedication and support of these advocacy efforts.

Sincerely,

Narpat Jain, DMD, MAGD
President, NJAGD
