On May 22, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill to make devastating cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or CalFresh here in California. The bill now goes to the U.S. Senate for consideration. The proposal, if it passes, would be the largest cut to SNAP ever at a time when need for food assistance remains extremely high.
This is an all-hands moment, and we need you to use your voice to protect these critical benefits that help all of us keep food on the table.
These cuts would be nothing short of devastating.
Right now, 1 in 4 people in Alameda County experience some level of food insecurity, but SNAP helps so many of us keep nutritious food on the table. These proposed cuts would cut off a lifeline so many of us depend on.
Over 170,000 individuals in Alameda County are currently receiving SNAP/CalFresh. ACCFB has the oldest and largest CalFresh outreach program in the state and helps families access over 6 million meals worth of food annually through our application assistance. This has generated $36 million that is going into our local economy. Tell your U.S. Senators – No cuts to SNAP.
SNAP is our nation’s first line of defense against hunger and it’s a program that’s proven to work. SNAP provides 9 meals for every 1 meal provided by the 200 Feeding America food banks. These proposed cuts will dismantle this vital program leaving millions with nowhere to turn.
Make your voice heard today. Thank you for joining us to end hunger.
