Right now, Congress is planning to impose devastating cuts on vital nutrition programs, including two that are incredibly important to the ACCFB community: SNAP and TEFAP.
A significant portion (5 million pounds annually) of the food that we distribute comes from the federal government through a program called TEFAP, The Emergency Food Assistance Program. SNAP (known in California as CalFresh and formerly known as “food stamps”) is the nation’s most effective anti-hunger program and our first line of defense against hunger.
If Congress moves forward with their plan, the impact on our community will be swift and painful. Not only would the plan worsen hunger and poverty, but it would also make it far more difficult for Food Banks like ours to help.
Government support — alongside support from donors and volunteers — makes food banking possible, which is why ACCFB is speaking up. Members of ACCFB’s advocacy team have been traveling to Washington, DC and meeting with our members of Congress. They need YOUR voice to join them in this effort.
Contact your members of Congress today and demand that they protect SNAP and TEFAP from devastating cuts.
Sending a message takes less than 5 minutes. We’ve already written most of the letter for you! But we encourage you to add your personal story and explain why food banks or CalFresh/SNAP have supported you or someone you know.
This is an all hands on deck situation. Please contact your representatives and share this with your friends and family across the state and country so they can do the same. Thank you for your support!
