Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP) Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) recognize nurse practitioners (NPs) as ACO professionals; however, the claims-based assignment pathway requires an NP’s patient to receive at least one primary care service provided by a primary care physician for the patient to be assigned to an MSSP ACO. While this restriction does not prevent individual NPs from joining an MSSP ACO, it prevents their patients from being assigned to the MSSP ACO through claims-based assignment, unless the NP sends their patient to receive a primary care service from a primary care physician. MSSP ACOs have demonstrated consistent cost-savings for the Medicare program while maintaining high-quality care. It is imperative to fully include NPs and their patients in MSSP ACOs to continue to improve patient access, quality, cost-effectiveness and ensure that all patients and communities have equitable access to value-based care models. Encourage your Members of Congress to cosponsor S. 3939/H.R. 7665 to fully include NPs and their patients into MSSP ACOs.
